Common Threads

Life's journey is full of intricate twists and turns, unexpected forks in the road and random events that shape one's destiny. If only we had a guide to help us prepare for life's opportunities and challenges -- to help us steer toward our destiny. I believe I've found my guide -- sewing. Sewing has truly given me a skill set providing the foundation and resourcefulness to mold my destiny.

I can hear you sighing and shaking your head -- no, no, no, you say; but I do believe that sewing does involve many lessons applicable to our life's journey. There are so many hard and soft skills to be gleaned from this simple art form. Geometry learned through determining yardage for pleated curtains, chair slipcovers and intriguing table runners. Problem solving applied to reading fabric pulls and gaps in the finished garment. Drafting and redrafting our favorite patterns for better fit as our bodies change and mature along the way. Computer skills needed to keep up with the technological innovations found in today's home embroidery machines.

Patience learned through ripping, resewing and resetting sleeves more times than I care to remember. Negotiation skills practiced by selecting and laying out mismatched completed quilt squares for an auctioned charity quilt. Composition and form learned from matching thread, fabric and notions to design the perfect gift for a truly unique individual. Listening skills enhanced through teaching and passing on our love of sewing. Need I go on?

That's the focus of this issue of Sewing Savvy: learning new skill sets, revisiting and reapplying old skills learned long ago, and continuing to create small works of art in fabric to help us meander through our life's journey toward our destiny.
